I am originally from the Philippines, and I moved to the United States in 1995. I initially lived in Washington and found my way to the Bay Area in 1997. I have since lived in the Bay Area. Here, I started my career as a flight attendant with United Airlines. I have always loved to travel and I truly enjoyed my job with UA. However, after the 911 tragedy, I decided to shift my career to hospitality. I worked for big companies such as the Hilton and Marriott Hotels, and I did this for about 13 years. I also enjoyed being in the hospitality business, however part of me kept on longing for something more rewarding,something that would also allow me to spend more time with my family.
In 2018, I decided to go back to school to earn my esthetician license. I was still working full-time for Hilton then, but with the support of my loving husband, Jesse, I was determined to study full-time. It was not easy at all! Working and studying full-time meant a lot of sleepless nights, but my family and friends kept me motivated and inspired. The idea of eventually doing what I have always enjoyed as a client kept me going.
With hardwork and determination, and with the unwavering support of my husband and my family, I established my own business — Skincare by Theresse in Pinole, CA. I have been serving many happy clients who need special care for their skin. I have enjoyed meeting all of them and have found it very rewarding to see my clients’ skin improve and transform. I feel blessed to be in a position where, not only do I enjoy everything I do, but I get to be instrumental in giving my clients’ confidence and happiness! I truly love my job! My clinic is my happy place! I do not see myself doing anything else. I continue to refine my practice to be better at what I do. Most importantly, I am able to balance my work and family life really well. I am grateful for my family and friends for all the love and support. They are my true inspiration.
I recently turned 50, and this is the proudest I have ever been in my career. When asked, I always encourage others to believe in themselves and to take the leap of faith to do what they love. I took a leap of faith in 2018 and I never looked back. As a saying goes: “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Life is indeed too short not to live our best life possible.

What did you do before becoming a beauty professional?
My path to my current career was not straightforward. Prior to finding my passion for excellent skincare, I worked as a flight attendant for United Airlines and a front office administrator for Marriott and Hilton Hotels.
There’s a lot of science involved with beauty products. Is this something you learned in advance or along the way?
I have always taken care of my skin and have always enjoyed trying out different beauty treatments and products to maintain my beautiful skin. When I realized that I could arrange to go back to school to learn more about skincare products, skin treatments, and the science behind the products and skincare, and eventually become an esthetician — I did not think twice about going back to school. I knew that it was something I had always wanted to do. As a client, I knew what products were effective and which treatments were significant in maintaining great skin. I learned a lot when I was in school through the certification program I needed to complete. I received many hours of practical and hands-on training and completed some written tests.
I’d like to deliver great service and products to all my clients as a skincare professional. I continue to attend short courses, conventions, and conferences within and outside of California to refine my practice. I especially get excited when I see new products and technology that I could use in my practice to serve all my clients better!
What products and beauty treatments should we look out for?
When you come to visit me at my clinic in Pinole, I would like for you to try my Signature Facial. I will create an experience for you based on your skin needs. My most popular treatments are Glass Facial and Theresse Anti-aging Glow Program. I take my time to understand my client’s needs to determine the best treatment to address current skin issues.
What’s the best part of your job?
I have always wanted to be my own boss. I enjoy running my business and making a living doing what I love. I especially enjoy being instrumental in improving my clients’ skin and overall look, which empowers them to feel confident.
What advice do you have for students wanting to become entrepreneurs?
Aim high! Give it your all to prepare for and do what you truly enjoy. Find your passion, be passionate, and love what you do. It makes it more meaningful when you can do something that makes others feel good about themselves.
How important is it to focus on your own goals?
It is important to determine and focus on your own goals because your goals would serve as your guide — for every step you take or every decision you make needs to be aligned with those goals. I always tell myself: be an inspiration to all your aspirations.
