The next@90 festival presented 9 world premiere ballets by 9 innovative, international choreographers, centering the innovation of the dance world right here in San Francisco. Next@90 festival featured new works by Nicolas Blanc, Bridget Breiner, Val Caniparoli, Robert Garland, Yuka Oishi, Yuri Possokhov, Jamar Roberts, Danielle Rowe, and Claudia Schreier.
GISELLE One of the greatest Romantic ballets, Giselle tells the poignant tale of a peasant girl with a gentle heart and a passion for dance. First love and a shocking revelation lead to a tour de force moment for the title character: Giselle’s mad scene. This magnificent production takes audiences on an unforgettable journey, from joyous celebrations in a Rhineland village to forest glade haunted by the ethereal spirits of maidens doomed to spend eternity dancing through the darkness, from the ultimate betrayal to tender forgiveness.

Tomasson’s 7 for Eight The season’s mixed repertory program opens with Helgi Tomasson’s 7 for Eight from 2004, a series of elegant solo and ensemble numbers for eight dancers. Composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
Thatcher’s COLORFORMS The stage debut of Myles Thatcher’s COLORFORMS, a new work the choreographer began developing for the Company in spring 2020. Thatcher’s vibrant reflection on joy and connection set to Steve Reich’s Variations for Vibes, Pianos, and Strings will come to life on the stage.
Forsythe’s Blake Works I Blake Works I is set to seven songs from James Blake’s album The Colour in Anything. Forsythe—one of ballet’s most innovative creators—crafts a living love letter to the artform with complex, kaleidoscopic movements that riff off the classic ballet vocabulary. Mar 14–Mar 19
CINDERELLA Christopher Wheeldon—of An American in Paris fame—transforms the timeless tale of Cinderella© with stunning style, charming twists, and mesmerizing visual effects. This magical ballet leaves behind the fairy godmother and talking mice in favor of a delightfully human story with a hopeful heroine, a noble prince, and magical elements such as an enormous billowing tree, whimsical creatures, and a carriage whose magical creation onstage will take your breath away. Set to the gorgeous score by Sergei Prokofiev, Wheeldon’s Cinderella is a fairy tale for our time. Mar 31- April 8
ROMEO & JULIET Passionate dancing, spine-tingling swordsmanship, and stunning set and costume designs bring Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers brilliantly to life. Set to the hauntingly beautiful Prokofiev score, Helgi Tomasson’s Romeo & Juliet transports you from the streets of Renaissance Verona to the grandeur of the Capulet’s ballroom, from the strife of warring families to the flush of first love and its tragic end.
