The Puerto Rican flag in ‘La Placita’ will be erased

The MiMo District Historic Preservation Board orders the mural to be painted white on the building’s façade.

Miami – May 19, 2022 – After a long legal battle to maintain the national identity of the Puerto Rican diaspora at Miami’s ‘La Placita’ restaurant , actor and businessman Julián Gil and Chef José Mendin announced that they will have to erase the mural of the Puerto Rican flag on the facade of the building.

From the beginning of the legal controversy, Gil and his partner Chef Mendin made the decision to appeal, in all instances, the ruling of the MiMo District Historic Preservation Board that it considers a violation of the city code that protects historic areas. The legal expenses incurred by the restaurant’s partners have been very high and unnecessary.

“I’ve always been a law and order person. It has fought judicially as much as possible so that the flag stays. We will abide by the decision of the MIMO Historic Preservation Board to erase the flag. We will look for a new place where we can enhance Puerto Rican culture and gastronomy. For the moment and until new acute we will remain open,” said Gil, who thanked miami Mayor Francis Suarez and the city commissioners who since day one have supported the Puerto Rican identity and the permanence of the Puerto Rican flag.

The restaurant ‘La Placita’, where the irresistible flavor of traditional Puerto Rican food is served and also sells t-shirts and objects alluding to Puerto Rico, has become an emblematic place for the Puerto Rican diaspora that visits it to taste its cuisine and take a photo in front of the building with the beautiful monostar. A traditional place for the enjoyment of the whole family.
The establishment opened in 2018 and the flag mural was painted by Puerto Rican Héctor Collazo.
