The mission of the international organization is to protect marine resources and promote sustainable fisheries to address the climate crisis. They are working with Bethke on a strategic campaign aimed at achieving tangible results that will help them restore the health and biodiversity of the oceans. An initiative that highlights the need to take climate action to ensure that the ocean can remain a source of life and sustenance for our planet, and our communities.

“My best memories are by the sea… the sea is my passion. But it is also one of the most important sources of life on the planet. Even if you don’t live near the sea, we all depend on the oxygen it produces, the
CO2 it captures, and the variety of food we extract from there. Everything we consume somehow comes from the sea or somehow ends up in the oceans. Life comes from the oceans so taking care of the oceans is taking care of life,”
Arap said.
The oceans are not only the source of food and work for millions of people, they are central to climate regulation. We need healthy oceans to tackle the climate crisis. They are fundamental in the fight against climate change. The oceans provide us with oxygen, capture heat and CO2 from the atmosphere. We cannot give them in return melting of polar helmets, loss of biodiversity and unique ecosystems.

They cover 71% of the planet and are fundamental to life on Earth. They are the place where most living things gather and play a central role in the world’s natural systems, for example in the regulation of the climate and in the absorption of carbon dioxide. They represent the livelihood of millions of fishermen and others around the world. The seas also feed hundreds of millions of people.

Unfortunately, they are in danger: scientists report that the amount of fish caught in the oceans has begun to decline, for the first time in history, in a few decades. Fortunately, Oceana knows how to fix things. Where fisheries management has been established with catch limits according to scientific recommendations, reducing by-catches and protecting habitats, the oceans are beginning to recover. Oceana is dedicated to promoting science-based fisheries management and the recovery of the world’s oceans.

The climate crisis is a fact, more and more we show its consequences around the world. Floods, extreme droughts, increasingly fierce fires constantly threaten the world’s ecosystems. At present, our oceans, forests, glaciers, jungles and wetlands are being devastated by industries that damage without qualms and do not question the effects of their activities in the short, medium and long term.

Individual actions count. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to our planet. This campaign by Oceana Mexico and Arap Bethke is an important step in addressing the problem and helping to protect ocean ecosystems, as well as the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

About Oceana

Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international organization focused exclusively on ocean conservation. Our delegations around the world work together to win strategic campaigns, aimed at achieving tangible results that help us restore the health and biodiversity of the oceans.

We envision a future where the world’s oceans are full of life. Where huge schools of anchovies, sardines and other fish are commonplace. Where marlins, sharks and tuna roam the seas in large numbers; where coral gardens, seagrass meadows and other seascapes thrive and sustain their life; where dolphins, whales and sea turtles bloom; where local fishing economies and cultures flourish rather than decay; and where seafood is an abundant and healthy source of food for hundreds of millions of people.

The oceans cover 71% of the planet and are fundamental to life on Earth. They are the place where most living things gather and play a central role in the world’s natural systems, for example in the regulation of the climate and in the absorption of carbon dioxide. They represent the livelihood of millions of fishermen and others around the world. The seas also feed hundreds of millions of people.

Unfortunately, they are in danger: scientists inform us that the amount of fish caught in the oceans has begun to decline, for the first time in history, in a few decades. Fortunately, we know how to fix things. Where fisheries management has been established with catch limits according to scientific recommendations, reducing by-catches and protecting habitats, the oceans are beginning to recover. Oceana is dedicated to promoting science-based fisheries management and the recovery of the world’s oceans.
