Launch campaign “Taking care of yourself is a Man’s Thing”, which seeks to raise awareness among the male population about the importance of a timely diagnosis of prostate cancer prevention.

Mexico City – August 9, 2022 – Together for men’s health. Mexican soccer player Guillermo (Memo) Ochoa and actor Julián Gil, along with Dr. René Sotelo launched the campaign “Cuidse es Cosa de Hombres”, which seeks to raise awareness among the male population about the importance of a timely diagnosis so that there are more therapeutic opportunities and better prospects to face the condition.

In the United States, Mexico and Latin America, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and it is estimated that one in seven will be diagnosed with the condition at some point in their lives. The campaign understands the urgency of the disease occupying the conversation of Latinos and joins the mission of breaking both taboos and misinformation that prevent more people from coming to specialists in a timely manner.

“Unfortunately, most men do not do the studies for the timely detection of this cancer, either because of fear, ignorance, not having access to laboratory tests and even because of sexist attitudes or the idea that ‘nothing happens’; so the disease is usually detected already in advanced stages, limiting treatments and the possibilities of being cured,” said Dr. René Sotelo.

“Today we want to demolish those myths, highlight what it means to be a man: man is not the one who risks his life for prejudices, leaving his family without his protection, but the one who takes the necessary measures to be able to detect diseases such as prostate cancer in time, and thus be able to save himself to remain by the side of his family for many more years, “- held the Julian Gil.

Memo OchoaIn this context, the campaign “Taking care of yourself is a Man’s Thing” is an effort that appeals to the responsibility that each of the parents, children, brothers or husbands has to take care of themselves and not to be carried away by fear or insecurities.

According to Dr. René Sotelo, a specialist in urology, early detection of prostate cancer improves the chances of coping with it. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that every man over 40 years of age go to a health professional to guide them and perform a review of the prostate.

Prostate cancer can be detected thanks to the prostate antigen test, but the test that confirms a diagnosis is the digital rectal examination, since 80% of the prostate, where tumors grow, is within reach of the treating physician’s fingertips. “There is no reason to be afraid of digital rectal examination, since it is a procedure that lasts only 15 seconds, but it can change the lives of men and their families forever,” said Dr. Sotelo.

Unfortunately, the idiosyncrasies of Latinos have perpetuated the belief that digital rectal examination affects the virility of men, which is why many men refuse to perform the study. Some experts estimate that, out of every 100 people, only four agree to have this scan done.

During the recording of the launch of the campaign, Julián Gil and Memo Ochoa, invited all men, regardless of age or gender, to join and participate in this campaign to combat a disease that, if detected in time, can be curable: “There are many things that define us as men, but only a true man does his part to be able to live longer protecting his family”, declared de Gil.

This is the second message of the crusade for men’s health, an initiative of the Venezuelan urologist-oncologist Dr. René Sotelo @doctorsotelo to help curb this reality that reaches figures in countries such as the United States and Mexico of 9,000 and 4,500 cases per year, respectively, and that face more frequently, young men in the world between 20 and 34 years of age.

Touch yourself and make sure your testicles are fine, evaluate if there is any hardness, any non-painful mass, feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, if something changed, and go to your urologist. He will be the best guide.

Taking care of yourself is a Man’s Thing. May your Health Remain FIRM. #SaludMasculina #CáncerDePróstata
