MasterChef contestant opens first vegan restaurant in Baja California’s Wine Country

Holistic, plant-based chef, Adriana Londono, of Masterchef Season 8, has opened Baja’s first Kombucha Bar and Vegan Restarant. La Kombucheria Vegana, is conveniently located in Valle de Guadalupe, just a 3 hour drive from Los Angeles.

Adriana, became enchanted with “El Valle”, as they call it locally, when she first visited the area from Los Angeles back in 2017. She was fascinated with the wineries’ architecture and impressed with their fine wines, but what really inspired her was the region’s local cuisine called “Baja-Med”. This international fusion is a combination of Mediterranean and Mexican ingredients locally sourced, with an added touch of Asian flare.

La Kombucheria features a twist on the theme by introducing signature dishes such as huitlacoche (corn truffle) risotto, oyster mushroom and mole tamales, nopal cactus and scobyche tostadas. The latter consisting of chopped up scoby (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast used to make kombucha) mixed with a ponzu sauce, seasonal fruit and served over a blue corn tostada. Make sure to order the avocado key lime pie or chocolate tart with passion fruit and raspberry coulis which are just spectacular.

La Kombucheria is also home to Big Mountain Kombucha, founded in the spring of 2018 by Adriana and her life partner Quino McWhinney of San Diego’s reggae band Big Mountain. The band’s popular remake of Peter Framton’s “Baby I Love Your Way” can often be heard live by Quino himself on their charming western-style veranda while customers indulge in every plant-based gourmet bite. It is a delight for both Adriana and Quino to share their love of nutritious AND delicious food to vegans and non-vegans alike.

The Kombucheria is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6pm and reservations are highly encouraged; the set menu is shared on Thursdays on social media and their website. If you are lucky, you might even catch a surprise acoustic set by Quino when he is not on tour traveling the world.
