Herzogenaurach, Germany, September 21, 2022: Today, Adidas by Stella McCartney presents a first-of-its-kind sportswear designed to demonstrate the potential of the circular fashion ecosystem. Created, tested and innovated in partnership with fashion’s biggest names and innovators, the activewear is the culmination of the brand’s circular pilot program Made to Be Remade. A recycling system where consumers can wear them down and then return them for remaking by scanning a QR code on the product. We’re bringing adidas one step closer to eliminating plastic waste.
With less than 1% of the world’s textiles currently estimated to be recycled into new textiles, it is important that the textile industry comes together to learn and share knowledge. The consortium is planned to be completed in three years and includes partners such as Frankenhuis to collect and sort end-of-life textiles, which are regenerated using the groundbreaking Infinity Fiber technology into a new man-made cellulose fiber called Infinna™ – which looks and Feels like pure cotton. It is then processed into yarn blended with organic cotton for garment production.
The viscose (60% viscose, 40% organic cotton) sportswear that is a member of the alliance is designed using a process from linear to circular models, as the focus is as important as the function and style of the garment’s life.
Built on comfort, this oversized tracksuit combines peach soft fabrics with a neutral light gray and black palette to provide the next generation with a modern canvas to navigate the world.
At the conclusion of the project, consortium partner Aalto University, a Finnish multidisciplinary community specializing in science, art, technology and design, will share insights with industry and make this potential circular design solution available to evergreen consumers .
Speaking about the collaboration, Stella McCartney said: “Sport is about always evolving the approach, and material innovation is no different. More than ever, we are being challenged to find new solutions to deliver the potential for circular fashion, so it’s been hugely exciting to collaborate with like-minded thinkers in the fashion landscape to help not only us, but the industry invent, innovate and consciously design. We are truly proud to have produced a garment that provides an end of life of existence, whilst also staying true to adidas by Stella McCartney’s signature style – for next generation activists.”
The Made to Be Remade program is Adidas’ first approach to extending the life of a product after launching the FUTURECRAFT Loop shoe – an early prototype that helps the shoe last longer. Adidas by Stella McCartney apparel is the latest milestone in the effort to showcase commercial end-of-life apparel.
This means consumers can wear a new adidas by Stella McCartney tracksuit set until worn and then return it by scanning a QR code in the adidas app. The product can then be sent back to the Infinited Fiber Company’s recycling stream, where it can be broken down for reuse, ensuring less waste enters the fashion ecosystem.
The adidas by Stella McCartney Sportswear Tracksuit Viscose (gender neutral) will be available on the adidas app on October 6th.
