Audi Hungaria celebrates its 30th anniversary and looks back on a real success story. The Győr-based company became the largest powertrain factory in the world and the first manufacturer in Hungary to produce high-end cars. Audi Hungaria Technical Development provides product development services to both Audi and the Volkswagen Group. In addition to manufacturing, the company provides a wide range of services to other Group brands, drawing on the extensive knowledge of its employees. Since its foundation, the company has invested a total of almost EUR 12 billion, making Audi Hungaria one of the largest investors in Hungarian industry. Almost 12,000 people currently work for Audi Hungaria, and around 50,000 more earn their living through their service providers and suppliers. The Győr site has an unparalleled track record. Audi Hungaria was founded in 1993 by the German company AUDI AG. Production started with four-cylinder five-valve engines and in the following years the company steadily expanded its activities: after the introduction of 6- and 8-cylinder engines in 1998, Audi Hungaria was the first company in Hungary to produce premium cars. Thanks to constant new investments over the past 30 years, Audi Hungaria produces more than 9,000 engines and 700 vehicles every day on an area of more than five million square meters.
Since the company was founded in Győr, more than 42 million engines and almost 2 million vehicles have been produced. The company operates one of the largest tool shops in Central Europe and manufactures body parts for top models from the Audi and Volkswagen groups, such as the Audi e-tron GT, Audi R8, and Lamborghini and Bentley models. As a pioneer in sustainability, Audi Hungaria has been operating CO2-neutral since 2020. At the Győr plant, decarbonization took place in four stages. The first step was the switch to green energy, so the company now gets all its electricity from renewable sources. The Audi Hungaria is now also heavily dependent on solar energy – thanks to the largest rooftop photovoltaic system in Europe. The second stage is thermal energy from geothermal sources. In the third step, Audi Hungaria covers natural gas consumption with biomethane certificates. Audi Hungaria currently compensates for unavoidable CO2 emissions, such as engine test bench emissions, with internationally recognized and certified CO2 certificates. This is the fourth stage and accounts for about 5 percent of CO2 emissions.
Audi Hungary continues its success story: the company is expanding its product portfolio and will soon start production of electric vehicles PPE (Premium Platform Electric), followed by electric MEBeco (Modular E-Drive System) from 2025.
